Love IS Everywhere…Even High School!
This is the part where I like to stretch the truth a bit and say we were high school sweethearts…
Eh…not so much!
We both went to the same high school and, although we were in the same grade and shared several classes we pretty much didn’t know the other existed. Michael will tell you his first thoughts of me were that I had “cankles” (it’s where your ankles are as big as your calves…whatever!) and that my hair was too yellow (got to love the out-of-the-box color jobs!). My first impression of Mike was that he was a little too “bad”, and a bit of a trouble maker.
It’s hard to remember now how things went from nothing to something. I had a boyfriend who he didn’t like, they were on the golf team together…so I guess that’s how we connected? Once we started talking it was pretty clear we were both trying to look for something, or someone, to pull us out of our current reality. Bad relationships, crazy family stuff, friends who made enemies seem benign…we had a lot going on. And throw in the fear of the unknown that comes with jumping off the cliff that is high school graduation…we just needed out. So I did what any seventeen year old girl would do…
I stole his cell phone for a hug.
I Tied his shoelaces to a chair.
And then I made my way into his carpool down to Myrtle Beach for the summer.
That was 8 years ago.
What seemed to everyone to be a relationship that would fade as quickly as it began turned into something more. Of course, when you fall in love at seventeen, things are not all sunshine and roses. What all those legitimate high school sweethearts (I think we should count, don’t you) don’t always tell you is that you want something very different at 17 than you do at 20, and at 23, and so on. You change so much…
But we changed together.
We were married three years ago (yup! that’s us on the cover!) and the changes continued. Colleges, career plans, Masters programs, favorite foods…everything changed…but each new change brought the opportunity to fall in love with something new, to learn to embrace a new chapter.
And now we are starting a new chapter in our love story…
A journey that will forever change our lives.
