Hello! I am Melody the designer of Lap of Luxury. I've always enjoyed crafts and my mother taught me to sew when I was a young teenage girl. I fought it and didn't understand why it was a big deal I learn, but over time I really started to enjoy it and now I am so grateful I can. Soon I wanted to learn how to do other crafts. So I taught myself how to crochet and started making scarves, bags and blankets while in high school. After high school, I went to college and through my college years I found it hard to find the time to crochet. I studied English and was blessed to get a teaching job soon after graduation. A few years ago, I started to notice a lot of crochet accessories in retail stores and thought, I could make that. So I did. I posted some pictures of myself wearing one of my hats on my blog and people went crazy. I was told many times that I should sell them. My mom then told me about Etsy. I figured I didn't have anything to lose, so I posted a few items up on Etsy and a few weeks later I made my first sale. I am so happy that I have been able to share my designs with people all over the world.

Animal House!

I wasn't sure what to title this post, I needed something clever but Animal House is all that came to me. The movie of course is what came to mind. Let me reference the quote "When parents are away the kids will play". That's exactly what happened at our home yesterday while we were both working. Enjoy the story :)

We keep in a high cabinet a black little tray filled with: Sugar packets for coffee, Apple cider packets, some medicine bottles, Cupcake sprinkles and of course.. a bag of Catnip. Our eldest cat Nevan is the only one besides Charlie and I that knows how to open cabinets. Yes, he's smarter than he looks. This is what I walked home to.

I guess the kitchen floor wasn't fun partying grounds. So they brought the festivities over to the couch.

Notice all of the Catnip dispersed and sprinkles. The cute little puppy you see all the time cracked open the sugar!
Suspect #1

Suspect #2?

Suspect #3?

Rolling around in the Catnip. What a life!

If only this was all on video. I bet it would have been hilarious and perhaps won on Funniest Home Videos? :)

That's Love: The Love Police

I apologize for how long it's been since I last wrote. I put together something wonderful to share with you all on this beautiful Sunday. Last year I told Charlie that I wish I could stop working and travel. When I say travel it was not for my own pleasure of seeing all the beauty in the world. It was to go out there, meet people and help spread the word of Love.

As impossible as it seemed to me thinking of getting up, quitting my job, leaving our home and just venturing out.. I feel in a way it could be feasible. Perhaps, someday. Charlie then showed me this video that truly inspired me. Shortly after I created my blog. There this guy named Charlie (not my Charlie, not to confuse you) who is apart of a group called 'The Love Police'. I wish I knew where to sign up! So I saw this video and it was amazing. This man walking on a NY subway that is by far a miserable place at times for anyone to be and working to cheer everyone up. I hope you enjoy, to me..That's Love!

I know we always say we don't have time but even if you watch a little of each I promise you'll be inspired. This first video is approximately 6 minutes and Charlie (the fellow from The Love Police) talking about why they travel and make their videos.

This video was the first one I saw, that my Charlie had shown me.

30 Days of Truth

Hello everyone!

I was just discussing last night the 30 Days of Truth with my new lovely friend Natalie. She is beginning this journey so be sure to visit, encourage and spread the love her way (Little Pink Book). For those who recently found my blog you may not have been around when I was doing the 30 Days of Truth. It actually helped me learn so much about myself. It gave me a chance to be me, honest with myself and those who read my blog. It meant a lot to me to share that part of myself with everyone. I told myself I'd like to do this again in a few years to see if anything has changed. I honestly, recommend everyone to partake in the 30 Days of Truth. I was inspired by my friend Garnet (Mining Garnet) and I know of many others who have done this too. Even if you don't want to write openly about it to the world, it's something to do in the privacy of your own home, perhaps a journal.

Below are links to each of my 30 Days of Truth. ♥

Day 01 → Something you hate about yourself.
Day 02 → Something you love about yourself.
Day 03 → Something you have to forgive yourself for.
Day 04 → Something you have to forgive someone for.
Day 05 → Something you hope to do in your life.
Day 06 → Something you hope you never have to do.
Day 07 → Someone who has made your life worth living for.
Day 08 → Someone who made your life hell, or treated you like shit.
Day 09 → Someone you didn’t want to let go, but just drifted.
Day 10 → Someone you need to let go, or wish you didn’t know.
Day 11 → Something people seem to compliment you the most on.
Day 12 → Something you never get compliments on.
Day 13 → A band or artist that has gotten you through some tough ass days. (write a letter.)
Day 14 → A hero that has let you down. (letter)
Day 15 → Something or someone you couldn’t live without, because you’ve tried living without it.
Day 16 → Someone or something you definitely could live without.
Day 17 → A book you’ve read that changed your views on something.
Day 18 → Your views on gay marriage.
Day 19 → What do you think of religion? Or what do you think of politics?
Day 20 → Your views on drugs and alcohol.
Day 21 → (scenario) Your best friend is in a car accident and you two got into a fight an hour before. What do you do?
Day 22 → Something you wish you hadn’t done in your life.

Day 25 → The reason you believe you’re still alive today.
Day 26 → Have you ever thought about giving up on life? If so, when and why?
Day 27 → What’s the best thing going for you right now?
Day 28 → What if you were pregnant or got someone pregnant, what would you do?
Day 29 → Something you hope to change about yourself. And why.

Sharing a Love Story ♥

I'm so excited to share this story from the ever so lovely Rebecca. Throughout the story I can bet you'll tilt your head in awe. It's beautiful! Also, the moment you click on her blog you will be smiling when you see her header. Enjoy and as always spread the love ♥

Rebecca Whitney: Rub Some Dirt on It
Our Love Story

My husband Jason and I met waiting tables together in Wellesley, Massachusetts, working side-by-side on and off for three years. We had an off-limits, sweep-me-off-my-feet kind of summer the year I turned twenty. I had a boyfriend; he was four years older. It was so unexpected and was the last thing I would have expected, but after that I just knew. The details of that summer are the stuff sappy movies are made of: exciting nights in the city, sneaking away to moonlit playgrounds and parks, drinking and dancing and falling in love. But at the end of the summer, he moved to San Diego as planned and I went back to college in Connecticut, without much hope of seeing each other again.

I used to joke to my college girlfriends that he had ruined me for all other guys; he would always be "the one that got away," the standard that I held anyone else to, and to which no one could live up. He was older and fabulous and so handsome. I still had two years left of undergrad and graduate school in my immediate future. He was living the life in SoCal. He was going to meet a movie star; I just knew it. I was destined to settle for someone less than him, because the odds of us winding up together were slim to none and maintaining any kind of friendship out of the question.

Well, years passed and then fate intervened. Four years later, after breaking up with my college boyfriend, one of my great friends from high school moved to San Diego. Another girlfriend, Molly, was coincidentally dating Jason’s brother, Tom. On a whim I decided to head to San Diego for New Year’s 2003, and, after confirming from Molly that Jason didn’t have a girlfriend, I called him and we met up. I think if there was a love at first sight moment, it might have been that night at The Tavern in Pacific Beach. I remember every second of that night: what we wore, where we first kissed, where we went. It’s such a cliché but it was like all those years didn’t matter and we just picked up where we left off.

We spent a few days together and then planned my next visit in April. During that visit, we planned my eventual move from Connecticut to California in August. Seven months after arriving, we moved in together to a little shabby apartment in Ocean Beach, where we could see the ocean from our bathroom. We lived a romantic and careless lifestyle until we got engaged in 2004, a year and a half to the day that I arrived in San Diego in my car packed with all my belongings, wondering how our love story would turn out.

One perfect wedding. A new job back in New England. A trip cross-country six months pregnant and a new house in Vermont, where we’ve made our home. We have been married for almost four years and have a 26-month-old son and 10-month-old daughter.

We are surrounded by family and love and are living our happy ending. I never would have imagined that Jason and I would end up together, but I can’t imagine life with anyone else.

I ♥ Hair!

I did something new today, spur of the moment I should say. I wrote a post back in July showing various hairstyles of mine through the years. Hair Post. Well, I've cut and coloured my hair since I was in my teens. I have gone to the hair salon a few times (enough to count on two hands) as well some fabulous friends of mine have done my hair.

Confession time.. I have not used a blow dryer on my hair since last summer, June to be exact. I also, stopped combing my hair. I know you're picturing someone with dreads, lol? I stopped blow drying my hair because I didn't like what it was doing, drying it out. I stopped combing my hair because it seemed to just rip my hair out, awful feeling. So after I wash my hair I run my fingers through it and get out all the snarls. My hair has never been healthier than it's become over this past year. I gave my hair a break so to speak!

So today, after leaving work I decided to head over to a hair salon. Nothing special, quick & cheap was what I was looking for. I just wanted a little, teeny, tinsy trim as I'm trying to grow it out as long as possible until I get sick of it ♥ I also, needed it thinned really badly. I normally do that myself but I have not picked up a pair of scissors to my hair in some time and wasn't ready to go through that ordeal.

The hair stylist put serum in my hair while she started small talk. Immediately the fragrance took me over. I asked her what it was that she just used. She said '.. Its a miracle serum.. really it's a miracle.. you don't even need to condition your hair... just put a little in after you shampoo it". I was intrigued as I'm trying to minimize what I put in my hair. $12 later for the trim & thin and $20 more later I went home with light weight hair and this amazing serum.

I wanted to share this with you, if you ever swing by a salon. Grab a bottle! Of course, it's only the first day I'm using it but I LOVE it already ♥ I'm officially taking conditioner out of the shower and I'll be replacing it with this serum for a while to see what difference it makes.

The product is called: it's a 10 - Miracle Styling Serum (alcohol free..woop woop!)

Sharing an Inspiring Love Story ♥

Today I share with you a very delicate Love Story by the beautiful Shah that we all love. I read this story many times from the moment I received it. What she went through in life and overcame is inspirational in itself. The love of her life was her saving grace. Please be sure to spread the love Shah's way. Thank you again for sharing this story with us all.

A Good Heart
I’d been to the hospital for a check up; the pink wound screamed at me in the mirror. It was four inches long and above the left eyebrow. It had its own heartbeat: bang, bang! It was still fresh from the car accident we experienced at the end of February.  I joked that I looked like the Elephant Man. My face was swollen beyond recognition, my eyes blackened, and my body whip-lashed.  “It will scar,” they said.  I was evidently self-conscious.
Times were hard; my brother was remanded in custody. In brief, he’d been ordered to shoot a criminal by another criminal who was owed cash - a loan shark of some sort. My brother was given a gun and a set of instructions. He declined, of course, but he insisted. Brian realised it was dangerous to dispute this.
After much thought and a little time, he took the gun along with incriminating tapes of conversations to the police, expecting appreciation and protection.  However, instead of arresting the loan shark, they arrested Brian for, ‘Conspiracy to kill.’  Months in custody passed, his mood dropped and his useless council told him he’d be there for ‘a very long time.’
March 4th 2004 our doorbell rang and the worse pain of our lives was delivered.  It seems that after our car accident, my brother became suspicious, fearing for his family. He had two kids.  He couldn’t retract his statement so he took his own life instead. The police said, “We’re afraid he’s dead. He hung himself earlier today.  He left this note for you all. We’re very sorry.”  These words still spin around my head on bad days. In 2005, the inquest said, “We must all learn from this sad case.” But do they?
My mum and I broke down, right there. Bereft, the year that passed was part blur, part torture.
I became dangerously ill with despair. Medication worsened my melancholy. In and out of hospital, I went. I became manic, then suicidal. I’d be manic and suicidal simultaneously. I hung out in dubious places with dangerous people, allowing myself to be used and mistreated. I felt ‘mislaid’ and friendless. Nothing made sense in my life, especially my emotions and moods. I slept little and lousily. I ate less and less. I drank too much alcohol, became hooked on codeine for incessant headaches, and I cried every single day, without exception. I wanted to join my dear brother and that was the only thought that gave any solace. I even tried.
Beyond all this anguish, I was also in my thirties and desperately alone. I’d always dated badly; sexual abuse had stained me. Dating abusive men was some kind of self-imposed torture. I cried about them, yet sought them out. It was an impossible situation as I longed for a love I felt I could never deserve.
In addition, even old friends began to vanish in a sea of their own normality, leaving me to my madness. I don’t blame them for this because I remember a little of how bizarre I had become. I was utterly unreachable.
Online, I met a guy from Florida. We chatted openly for a year and he visited me several times, whenever in England.  There was no romance, just friends.  On one visit, I’d recently buried my father, who’s greatest love – heroin – finally killed him. I’d left hospital after an overdose and was still quite ill, so I’d stopped smoking and was uneasy, socially. I was fragile but he dragged me out to a birthday party and introduced me to his pal, David. We connected immediately.
He was handsome and a year older than myself.  He’d recently completed his training as a pilot and hated smokers.  Luckily, I wasn’t one on that night. I remain a non-smoker largely because of David.
We talked all night and when the evening ended, numbers were nervously exchanged.  We soon met again for Asian food in Birmingham.  I was panicky but he seemed so grounded and gentle that he put me at ease. I relished his company. On our first date, we spent 48 hours together, talking! He had a truly good heart.
He’d been hurt by an unfaithful girlfriend and I was clearly damaged goods; we found it difficult to trust one another, originally. Arguments grew with our passion as vulnerability grew with our love.  It was thorny for us both, but we recognised a lifetime partner within each other and pressed on.  At Christmas, after only two months together, we exchanged ‘I love you’s’. After four months; February the 14th 2005 with the bubbles from champagne and bath foam tickling our noses, in a hotel in London, he proposed.  I was deliriously happy.

A year later I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It seems my brother had it too. It was tough to hear. However, David gives my life stability and meaning, so now I’m rarely ill. He has stood by me through some of the most agonizing experiences of my life, and he has made me happier than I ever thought possible.
We married in a chapel at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, September 2008.  We ate at a fabulous Italian restaurant, overlooking St Marks Square.  We rode the gondolas, and later we all danced at a piano bar in the Paris Hotel.  It was the best day ever, though I missed Brian and dad.
I experienced so much in so short a time; losing my father and brother in awful circumstances, the self-imposed abuse, the discovery of our madness - acclimatising to the diagnosis and life-long medication – and finally, infertility. But with David at my side, I remain strong.
We are thinking about our third cycle of IVF - or getting a puppy? Wish us luck!

That's Love: Coming Together

I am very excited to kick off the new feature, That's Love with a story I received back in December. My lovely friend sent this to me 3 days shy of Christmas and I held onto it with the thought of having a feature that the story would fit perfectly into.

Coming Together

Story submitted by : Maine Mummy @ http://mainemummy.blogspot.com/

I work for a school Superintendent's office and this week our High School Chorus Teacher was giving a tour of the school to some chorus members. Well, she forgot to lock her office and when she got back all the money was missing from her purse. Being Christmas she had an inordinate amount of cash on hand and so it was a pretty devastating loss. Word got around. The next day during Chamber Singers she was presented with a pile of money that had been collected throughout the building from teachers, students, custodial and secretarial staff -  $491.00 -  replacing the cash that had been taken.  The cafeteria staff also brought her hot chocolate, food, tea, and 20 Toboggan Tripler Maine Lottery Tickets, each of which has the potential to win up to $3,000.00. Her comment when thanking everyone was this... "Suffice it to say that one person with greed in his or her heart did not triumph yesterday."

This on the same day that for the third year in a row a wealthy local businessman has sent a Secret Santa to goodwill and other places to hand out $10,000 in $100 bills.

All stories for this feature will be archived here. We would love to read your story so if you would like to share please visit for details ♥:

New Feature!

Hello all you beautiful people! I hope that you are having a great weekend and living it up! I have so many ideas in my head for some really wonderful features on Love is Everywhere. Tonight, I share with you something new and exciting. Everyone knows about the Love Stories feature which I can assure you will always be here! Any feature I start here will have no expiration date, I promise ♥ I will share the stories as they are received.

My drive for this blog has grown over time. I enjoy writing and sharing my life with all of you. I adore reading about each and every one of you and being given the beautiful opportunity to post your love stories. I want this to keep growing. I want a Love Movement, that's my goal. To reach as many people as possible and spread the love. I really hope that it has made an impact on all of you who read this blog. Whether you stop during your day to embrace a moment or smile at a stranger... to expressing your gratitude to others and appreciating your own life even more than before.

The brand new feature that I am adding to Love is Everywhere is called.... drumroll.... oops dropped a drumstick.... ;)

That's Love! ♥

So what exactly is 'That's Love' about? Simple, my friends. What I would love for you to share is anything around you that you feel is an act of love. It could be someone that inspired you by something they did, perhaps something you did yourself that you feel great for doing. It could be an amazing story you saw on your local news that you want to share. Because we don't always see the same news. There is so much beauty in the world, that not all of us get to see. I'm inspired all the time by others actions and my first thought is... "Wow.. now That's Love". If you have a story whether it's your own, one your heard, something you saw or even something you have planned for the future and want to spread the word please send it my way.

We all have the power to do something inspirational. We have all witnessed something. It's just, sometimes, we need to be reminded of this. By reading each others stories it will help us to take a step back next time we witness or do something great. Here is an opportunity to do so.

This is very similar to how the Love Stories work. You can send your story via email to me at LovewithKatie@gmail.com. If you would like to include pictures you are more than welcome to! For more details click on the cute new button for That's Love! ♥

I'm very excited to begin this new journey with all of you. Together we can bring love, beauty and tons of positivity here and spread it all out everywhere!
